Iceland debuted in the second edition of Europa Song Contest and has participated in every edition since then. The Icelandic broadcaster, RÚV, has been in charge for the country's participation since the second edition. The broadcaster started hosting Söngvakeppnin.

Iceland has two victories. The first victory of the country was achieved by Gladius ft. Klara Elias in the fourth edition with the song "The Lunatics" and the second victory was achieved by iLL Blu ft. Glowie in the sixth edition with the song "Tribalist". However, Birgir Stefánsson brought the first and to date only non-qualification to Iceland in the second edition, when he came fourteenth in the semi-final with the song "Last For Long" and therefore failed to gain enough points to qualify for the final.
